The 5 Best Electric Scooters On The Market In 2021

The electric scooter market continues to expand rapidly – and with some of the great models on the market, it’s no surprise why. These are not only a green, low carbon, and sustainable method of transport, they’re great for your physical health and well-being. Plus, they’re super fun to ride!

There are lots of options out there, so if you’re looking to buy an e-scooter you might be confused by the huge choice. But fear not – we’ve enlisted the help of our managing director Paul Williams. Here are his picks of the 5 best electric scooters currently on the market.*

best electric scooter

1. Xiaomi 1S

best electric scooter

Typical price: £499

“The perfect first scooter”

Xiaomi is one of the world’s biggest e-scooter manufacturers – and with good reason. Its products are manufactured in China, and they have great build quality (including aircraft-grade aluminium) and a lightweight frame.

Xiaomi prices have been dropping, so you can pick up a great electric scooter for a bargain right now. However, amongst Xiaomi’s newer models, my pick is the 1S. It has a range of 18.6 miles, a 250w motor, and 8.5-inch tyres which make it comfortable to ride. It also charges in just 5 hours.

This is a great e-scooter for beginners or those looking to keep it light and easy. It’s only rated as IP54 for water resistance, so it’s not suited to wet weather. However, it’s a great option for fair-weather riders. The main difference between the 365 and the 1S is that the 1S has a speedometer on the display and the battery is more efficient. What’s not to like?

2. Unagi Model One

best electric scooter

Typical price: £1,066

“The minimalist’s dream”

Electric scooters don’t come sleeker or more futuristic than this! The Unagi Model One is a beautifully designed and low maintenance premium e-scooter made from quality materials. These include aluminium and the same carbon fibre as is used in Elon Musk’s Space X rockets.

The design elements of this electric scooter include a fantastic one-click folding mechanism, and motor options are 250w in the E250 model or 500w in the E500. Both come with a class-leading battery manufacturer in LG. What’s more, it’s one of the lightest e-scooters on the market at just 12kg, making it perfect for commuters.

The brake is electronic (as opposed to the traditional mechanical brake). This means it doesn’t stop as fast as some other electric scooters, which is worth considering. Its smaller, solid wheels mean less risk of punctures, but the ride can be a little more jittery, making it less suited to rough terrain.

Having said that, its simplistic design, amazing looks, and easy controls make it a great scooter for day-to-day use. Its range could be better at around 14km, but it’s surprisingly quick and easy to ride. In summary, this e-scooter is sure to turn heads!

3. Inokim Oxo

best electric scooter

Typical price: £2,200

“The speedster’s delight”

Inokim started building electric scooters back in 2009 from a garage (project “MyWay” founded by the fantastically named Nimrod Sapir Recardo), so it has a vast amount of experience. Indeed, the build quality of the Oxo is what makes it stand out from the crowd.

With dual suspension, dual 1,300W brushless gearless motors (which can give 2,600w at the peak), and a range of up to 68 miles, this machine will have you riding for hours – and not just because of its sheer power. Unlimited, it can reach 40 mph, but it comes with enormous stopping power via the front and rear disk brakes. Just remember to wear a full crash helmet and protection at speeds like this.

The balance and stability of this e-scooter oozes quality, making it a class leader and capable of both on-road and off-road rides. It falls down on portability, however, weighing in at a whopping 33.5kg. It’s up against some tough competition, too – particularly the likes of the Xero 10X, Apollo Pro, and Kaabo Mantis 8.

But overall, this European built electric scooter has quality stamped all over it.

4. Pure Air Pro

best electric scooter

Typical price: £399

“The all-rounder”

British e-scooter retailer Pure Electric, founded by entrepreneur Adam Norris, has a growing number of UK stores and online presence. Pure has now launched its own electric scooter –the Pure Air – together with the upgraded Pure Air Pro.

These are great, feature-rich e-scooters. With the ever-unpredictable weather in the UK, you need models like this which offer good capability in water and rain. The IP65 water resistance rating of this electric scooter means it’s well-suited to almost anything the elements throw at you!

What’s more, the large 10-inch air-filled tyres make the ride comfortable and less bumpy than other e-scooters in this category. Whilst you may still get a puncture, they come with pre-installed puncture prevention fluid, which will help you get home if the worst happens.

The 250W motor has plenty of power for most people day-to-day, but if you want more acceleration, the Pro version comes with a 350w motor. Both versions come with an anti-skid electronic brake in the front in addition to a rear mechanical brake, which makes it a safe scooter to ride.

This electric scooter weighs 16.5kg, so it’s not as portable as some others. But overall, it’s simple, very well-designed, built from quality components, and will carry most riders (up to 120kg). It has a range of over 18 miles (which increases to over 22 miles for the Pro version) and a maximum speed capped at 15.5mph - so is likely to comply with future e-scooter legislation.

All in all, it’s a great solution for most people backed up by an established UK company which can even service your scooter and keep you on the road.

5. Beyond Electrek EMove Cruiser

best electric scooter

Typical price: £1,149

“The long-range wonder”

Californian firm Voro Motors is one of several leading distributors of electric scooters in the US, which are now available here in the UK via Beyond Electrek Scooters based in Northampton. Whilst they’re trialling a new model for 2021 – the Roadster, which has yet to arrive – our pick until then is the EMove Cruiser.

It boasts a silky-smooth ride thanks to full suspension in both front and rear. It also comes with large 10-inch pneumatic car-grade tyres that have no inner tubes, so you can say goodbye to hard-to-change inner tube punctures! Plus, it’s capable of a staggering 62-mile range on a single charge.

Quality is stamped all over this e-scooter, with a large 52V 30AH LG battery hooked to a 1,600W motor enabling it to climb 20-degree hills and accommodate the heaviest of riders (up to 140kg).

It’s fast, too, with a 0-15mph acceleration of just 3.4 seconds. At 24kg, it’s heavier than most electric scooters, but with its ability to eat miles, together with a large deck, good lighting and dual disk brakes front and rear, it’s a hugely capable scooter and a relaxing ride.

*Please note that, at the time of publication, e-scooters can only legally be ridden on private land and with the permission of the landowner.
