Insurance for privately owned e-scooters
Electric scooters – also referred to as e-scooters - have soared in popularity in recent years.
Privately owned e-scooters are only legal on private land as it is against the law in the UK to ride e-scooters on public land including parks, pavements, footpaths, and roads. The only other way to use an e-scooter is by renting one through an authorised rental scheme.
Due to the rules around using e-scooters, insurance for electric scooters through Cycleplan only covers you for using your e-scooter on private land, with the landowner’s permission.
When used on private land, e-scooter insurance through Cycleplan can cover you for theft and accidental damage, personal accident if you were to injure yourself, or injury to another person or property.

Why consider e-scooter insurance?
Although e-scooters are illegal in public spaces or roads, the risks associated with riding and owning one still remain while using your scooter on private land.
A standard home insurance policy may also not cover you for third-party claims. Specialist electric scooter insurance can ensure you and your scooter are protected if you are on private land and have the landowner's permission.
Theft & damage insurance for electric scooters
As well as being a fun investment, electric scooters can be expensive, with a standard model setting you back around £600, while top-of-the-range devices can cost upwards of £2k, making an e-scooter a highly desirable item to be stolen and something you’d rather not damage.
With this in mind, an e-scooter insurance policy through Cycleplan can cover up to £30k of theft and accidental damage. This policy also provides protection if your electric scooter is stolen while being used by you, or an immediate family member who permanently lives with you.

E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

As e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles, this means the rules that apply to motor vehicles also apply to e-scooters. However, using privately owned e-scooters in public spaces, including on roads, pavements or parks is illegal. If you’re found to be using a privately owned e-scooter in public, you risk the vehicle being seized, a fine, or points on your licence.
-
If you are using a rental e-scooter, GOV.uk advice, is to wear a cycle helmet. However, this is not a legal requirement. You should follow the same safety precautions you would if you were riding a bike, whether you are using a rental e-scooter in public or using your own e-scooter on private land to avoid accidents.
-
As a desirable item, it is recommended to follow proper security measures when your e-scooter is not in use. If you don’t follow the proper security measures listed in your insurance policy documents, your claim could be invalid.
