Meet our e-bike insurance expert

"Whether you’ve bought it yourself or received it as a gift, an e-bike is often a prized possession. With theft accounting for around 50% of claims last year, taking the right precautions is essential. Using an approved, high-quality lock and maintaining strong security habits, even when your e-bike is stored at home, can make a significant difference.

"When out and about, always secure your e-bike to a solid, immovable object. For further guidance on effective protective measures, refer to our policy documents and website, where you’ll find practical advice to help reduce the risk of theft."

Why consider electric bike insurance?

If your bike is stolen or damaged, the cost of replacement can be high. E-bike theft claims rose 80% in one year in 2025 — making insurance increasingly relevant.

While you may already take safety precautions such as wearing a helmet, bike lights, and high-vis clothing, riding an e-bike is not without its risks.

Electric bicycles in the UK allow speeds of up to 15.5mph, so alongside the safeguards you put in place, you may want to consider getting electric bicycle insurance to protect you and your bike should the worst happen.

For example, if you were in an accident involving a third party, electric bike insurance may be able to cover some or all of the costs for:

  • the damage to your bike
  • your loss of earnings should you be unable to work due to injury
  • the legal fees should the third party make a claim against you

Electric mountain bike insurance

Many people are turning to electric mountain bikes to enjoy all the benefits of traditional mountain bikes with the added benefit of battery power, to elevate their ride. Electric mountain bikes can be expensive, and the extra power can bring its own extra risks. With a Cycleplan bike insurance policy, you can build a policy that’s right for you and your bike.

E-bike vs home insurance

While some home insurance policies may cover an e-bike under your contents insurance or as an optional add‑on, this cover is often limited. Home insurance typically won’t protect you against the wider riding risks that a specialist electric bike policy is designed to cover.

For example, dedicated e-bike insurance through Cycleplan can offer benefits such as loss of earnings cover if you’re injured in a cycling accident — something standard home insurance is unlikely to provide, which often only covers theft from the home.

E-bike insurance through Cycleplan is designed for cyclists and can add a layer of financial protection to help cyclists ride in confidence.
