What is cyclocross?
Cyclocross, or CX as it is more commonly known, is currently enjoying a surge in popularity throughout the UK. Many liken CX to triathlons - without the swimming - as it involves bike riding as well as running and even a bit of jumping, climbing and slipping in between.
CX is a hugely technical sport, which requires aerobic endurance, bike handling skills, high end power and strength. On some occasions you will be required to jump off and physically lift your bike over certain obstacles or down slippery, muddy descents. Of course, you can choose to stay on the saddle, but it’s at your risk, a gamble that makes the sport so much fun.
Anyone can give CX a go and most events cater for all abilities. The season starts in September but that’s not to say that you can’t head out for a ride through the woodland and bridleways anytime.
The benefits of a CX bike
CX is great fun, and makes a welcome change from the usual road riding you may be doing. It also places less impact on you and your bike than mountain biking.
But it can be a dangerous sport; any ride off road has to contend with a number of elements that can potentially cause crashes such as muddy tracks, tree trunks, rocks and uneven bridleways.
This is why you will need a specific CX bike, which will help combat such conditions and allow you to manoeuvre yourself through the trails and any obstacles that come your way.
A CX bike is a combination of both a road and mountain bike with drop bars and has integrated shifters/brake levels and knobbly tyres. If you’re planning on heading out for a day’s exploring, you may also want mudguards and rack mounts too.
The need for insurance cover
Buying a CX bike or modifying your road bike comes at a price, which is why it’s important to have your bike covered should you damage it.
If you are involved in an accident – through someone else’s fault or your own – and damage your bike, kit or accessories, our cyclocross insurance will cover it. Our accidental damage insurance will cover bike repair costs and if it needs replacing we offer ‘new for old’ on bicycles up to three years old.
Your own safety is also important. CX is a physically demanding sport and falls and crashes are quite common. If you happen to seriously injure yourself, providing you’ve taken out the personal accident option you will be covered if the injury results in permanent disability or death.
Insurance for competition
CX is a massively competitive sport that takes place over a 2-mile looped course on paved and off road surfaces through flat and rolling terrain. CX is brilliant fun and a great way to keep fit once the cycling season has come to an end. If you are interested in giving it a go, Cycleplan offer a competitive use policy option, so you, your bike and your kit will be covered in competitions.
Insurance for all your bikes
If you own a cyclocross bike, it’s likely you also have at least one other bike in your collection for other types of cycling. We can insure all your bikes on one policy to make things as easy and uncomplicated as possible for you.
