In a week in which we’ve seen a van driver sacked after forcing a cyclist off the road, a woman jailed for mowing down a cyclist and even Tour De France winner Chris Froome deliberately rammed by an impatient driver in France, there’s a feeling in the air that cycling is becoming more and more hazardous. As Froome himself put it, “If it can happen to a Tour de France winner, then no one is safe.”
So, what can be done about it?
An all-party parliamentary cycling group (https://allpartycycling.org/) has given evidence to MPs recently calling for police forces nationwide to give more resources and priority to road policing, the submission of cyclist video evidence, and greater prosecution for dangerous drivers.
In South Yorkshire, meanwhile, more than 50 separate organisations have backed demands for police to implement what’s called a ‘Close Pass’ initiative, where motorists caught passing cyclists in less than the approved 1.5 metre distance are given safety advice, with repeat offenders prosecuted.
