Damage to your tandem
Tandems aren’t cheap with entry level bikes starting around the £800 mark and top end bikes costing in excess of £2000. Remember, tandems are specialist pieces of kit, and their components cost hefty sums too. Certain tandem wheels for example can cost up to £400.
Accidents can and do happen, which could cause damage to your bike. Something as simple as riding over a pothole could potentially wreck wheels and frames - tandems are heavy, and there’s a lot of weight being put through the bike. Tandems are big too, and require good bike handling skills and manoeuvrability around the city streets and country lanes. It can be very easy to clip it against a street post, scrape it along a hedgerow or even knock into a car.
Even locking it up in your garage when you get home has the potential to cause damage given its size. If you do damage your bike, our standard tandem insurance will cover you for accidental damage, covering the cost of bike repairs or a replacement. It’s also important to remember that only one rider needs to insure the bike and it will be covered.
Damage to your kit
As well as investing in your tandem, your cycling clothing and accessories will no doubt also be worth a significant amount. Bike panniers for example, which a lot of tandem cyclists use, can cost a lot of money, as can bike lights, bottle cages and GPS computers. If you damage any of your cycling accessories following an accident, you can make a claim if you’ve taken out our cycle insurance accessories option.
With the majority of tandem bikes costing over a few thousand pounds, it’s no wonder why they are targeted so much by bike thieves. Coupled with the fact that many aren’t secured properly, they are also easy targets. It can be stressful having to always worry about your bike, or parts of it, being stolen. With our tandem insurance, providing it’s locked correctly using an approved lock, you will be covered. Standard on all our policies is a brand new bike if your stolen bike was up to three years old.
