Why should I consider mountain bike insurance?

There’s nothing more thrilling than getting out on your bike and zipping along the country paths with the fresh air on your face and barely anyone else in sight.

But as with all outdoor hobbies, there is always the potential risk of accidents. Having specialist mountain bike insurance in place could reduce the financial impact on your life if anything happens.

For example, you could damage your bike on a jump and end up stranded in the countryside. MTB insurance could cover the cost of replacing your bike and the taxi ride home, so you can get back to exploring in no time.

What does the mountain bike insurance cover?

Through Cycleplan, you can protect yourself and your bike against various accidents, so you have complete peace of mind whilst out on the trails.

All the policy covers are optional, so you only ever pay for the cover you need. Here’s a summary:

  • Public Liability—provides indemnity for mental injury, bodily injury, death or disease to any person or damage to third-party property up to £5m
  • Theft & Damage—provides cover for theft, accidental damage and malicious damage to bikes up to £30,000 and accessories up to £1,000
  • Personal Accident & Loss of Earnings—provides cover for bodily injury, permanent disablement, physiotherapy, broken bones, hospitalisation, and emergency dental expenses up to £50,000, and for loss of income up to £750 per week
  • Replacement bike hire—provides indemnity for hire of a bike following a claim for your bike up to £1,000
  • Competitive use—the option to extend your normal cover when you enter a competition
  • Race fees—provides cover for non-refundable race fees if you were unable to attend as a result of injury or a valid bike claim up to £250
  • Taxi fees—helps cover the cost of getting home following an accident on your bike up to £50

What’s not covered?

Knowing what isn’t covered before taking out mountain bike insurance is important so you can ride worry-free. The policy does not provide cover for:

  • Claims where Evidence of Ownership cannot be provided
  • Theft where the security requirements haven’t been met
  • The use of the bike for trade or business purposes (excluding commuting to or from work)
  • Public Liability under the age of 16

Remember—the policies we arrange are provided on the basis that bikes left unattended are secured to an immovable object using either a Sold Secure rated lock or Thatcham approved lock.
