Why do I need insurance for my hybrid bike?

The hybrid truly is the complete all round bicycle. Whether you’re riding through towns and cities, weaving in and out of traffic, or navigating your way around the dirt paths and bridleways, the hybrid can do it all.

Whenever the time, wherever the place, whatever the weather, you can ride your hybrid – although perhaps, for really harsh weather, in thick mud, a cyclocross bike may be a better option.

There is a downside to being an all-rounder. A bike that can ride on multiple terrains in a number of situations is more vulnerable to a wider variety of risks and dangers. Coupled with the fact that for many cyclists, the versatile hybrid is their one and only bike, means it’s vitally important that you have it insured for any problem thrown its way.

Damage to your bike

On a road bike, the dangers are obvious: other cyclists, car drivers and potholes. But on a hybrid, there are many more dangers to contend with. Riding on dirt paths, for example, puts an extreme amount of force through the bike, which it has to deal with.

As a cyclist, you also have to be aware of other road debris such as gravel, low flying tree branches and roots that could harm the bike. Our hybrid bike insurance will cover you for accidental damage, bike repairs or a replacement.

Damage to your clothing and accessories

Depending on what type of bike ride you want to do will determine how much you will have to modify your hybrid. A summer’s day ride through the lanes won’t require much, but an evening commute home will mean you will have to add lights to the front and back of your bike.

Alternatively, if you want to spend a day on the bridleways, then you might want to add on some mudguards, or even a pannier to carry extra clothing and food. All this needs insurance cover, as a lot of bike accessories aren’t cheap. If your accessories or clothing are damaged or stolen, you can make a claim if you’ve taken out our bicycle accessories option.

Bike Theft

It doesn’t matter where you are, if you leave a bike on its own then you need to lock it securely. Bike thefts don’t only occur in the city. Whether you’re in a country pub, a nature reserve or a wooded bridleway, fasten it properly to an immovable object.

If your bike or parts of it are stolen, providing it’s locked correctly using an approved lock, you will be covered. Standard on all our policies is a brand new bike if your stolen bike was up to three years old and purchased as new.

House insurance warning

Recent research has shown that one in three household policies do not cover bikes away from the home. Some policies also state bikes aren’t insured at home unless they are secured to an immovable object inside a locked shed or garage. It’s always important to read the small print.
