Everything You Need To Know About Electric Scooter Insurance

Electric scooters will be allowed on public roads for the first time in the UK later this year, the government recently announced. As such, electric scooter insurance will soon become an increasingly essential requirement. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about electric scooters and getting electric scooter insurance.

Are electric scooters legal in the UK?

Electric scooters are legal in the UK, but only for use on private land. At present, it’s illegal to ride an electric scooter on a public road. If you’re caught by the police, you’ll be reprimanded for breaking the law and for not having insurance.

What does this change in the law mean?

As of April 2020, electric scooters are only be allowed in four locations: Derby and Nottingham, the West Midlands, Portsmouth and Southampton and the West of England Combined Authority (WECA). These have been described as “future transport zones” and they’ll effectively be used as test locations.

If the change to the law is made nationwide, people will be able to ride their electric scooters on public roads across the UK.

When will this change in the law come into effect?

This is still unclear, as the trial period is yet to commence. It’s thought that, once the trail has been completed and the government is happy with the results, the law could be implemented nationwide by the end of the year. This, however, does depend on the government findings during the trial period.

Will electric scooter insurance be the same as bicycle insurance?

In many ways, it will be similar. You’ll be able to take out Public Liability, Personal Accident cover and protection against theft and loss. This will become a lot clearer as we move closer to the law change being implemented nationwide.

Would my electric scooter be covered by my home insurance?

For now, at least, your electric scooter would be covered by your home insurance. But, as you would expect, this only applies when your electric scooter is at home. If you were to ride it in a public place, it would no longer be covered. That’s why, when the law change is confirmed, it’ll be important to have specialist electric scooter insurance to ensure you’re fully covered.
