Despite Lizzie Deignan (formerly Armitstead) playing down her form at the beginning of the season – thanks to an illness she was battling all spring – her results say otherwise. She scored three second places to her Boels-Dolmans team-mate Anna van der Breggen in the three races of the Ardennes Classics – Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Amstel Gold.
Van der Breggen later repaid Lizzie by giving her strong support in April’s Tour of Yorkshire, where Lizzie secured a stunning victory in the race – using her local knowledge to finish an impressive 55 seconds ahead of the chasing pack.
July, meanwhile, saw a storming performance lead to a second-place finish in the Tour de France’s La Course for Lizzie Deignan, as well as being crowned the Road Racing British National Champion in July.
With the British National Championship jersey recently placed round her shoulders for the fourth time, her main priority will now be World Championships in Bergen 2017 and reclaiming her world title.
In Norway, Lizzie will find herself reunited with the Great Britain team. Coupled with a course that she feels suits her after visiting Bergen in early May, everyone is expecting a strong performance – including Lizzie herself!
We caught up with the former World Champion and Cycleplan ambassador to get her views on Bergen 2017.
