We had a rapid-fire chat with Matt Middleton, owner and founder of The Bicycle Lounge. The Lounge is both an online and bricks and mortar bike shop in the university town of Ormskirk, Lancashire. He told us where he loves to cycle most, plus what winter bike gear no cyclist should be without.
Matt founded The Bicycle Lounge in 2012 on the site of his family’s popular bike shop, Harry Middleton Cycles, where he had worked for 20 years. The concept behind The Bicycle Lounge was to give cyclists the best selection of products, the best value and most importantly, the best personal service in the industry – all in one place.
Since 2012, the business has gone from strength to strength, as well as being heavily involved with the Harry Middleton Cycling Club (HMCC), a well-known local club that renamed in tribute to Matt’s dad, previous bike shop owner and popular local cyclist, Harry Middleton – since they famously met outside the shop every week.
Tell us, what is the thing you love most about what you do?
When you have a customer return to the store with that big smile on their face after being out on their new bike for the first time.
Where is your favourite place to cycle?
The picturesque Lancashire Lanes and the French Pyrenees.
What should cyclists be wearing in winter?
Good overshoes and gloves.
What are your top three tips for choosing winter cycling gear?
Buy quality clothing! It fits better and lasts longer. Always purchase a good base layer; Castelli Perffetto jackets are the best on the market by a mile for a cycling enthusiast.
What is your overall top tip for cycling in the winter months?
If your car is iced over in the morning, don’t go out, go on the indoor trainer instead. One ride in icy weather could mean 6-10 weeks away from your bike if you slide off!
What are your thoughts on fitting winter tyres to your bike?
A must! Winter tyres give better grip and better puncture protection.
What is the thing you like most about winter cycling?
Riding your bike under a clear blue sky on a cold crisp morning.
